South Korea arrest elderly religous sect leader over coronavirus investigation

August 1, 2020

The elderly leader of a religious sec has been arrested in South Korea. It comes as part of an investigation into whether the church purposely hampered the government's anti-virus response – after thousands of worshippers were infected earlier this year.

Lee Man-hee,  chairman of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, was taken into custody over charges that the church hid some members and under-reported gatherings to avoid broader quarantines.

Mr Lee and his church have denied all accusations.
