Stars Speak Out Against Floyd Killing

Lady Gaga has slammed President Donald Trump as a “racist” and a “fool” as she expressed her outrage over the death of George Floyd.

Protests have flared up across the United States after the handcuffed black man died in Minneapolis this week after a white police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes.

Video of the arrest, which has gone viral, shows Mr Floyd begging for air and saying, “please, I can’t breathe” and “don’t kill me”.

The officer, Derek Chauvin, 44, was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Sharing a lengthy statement on Instagram, the singer wrote: “I’m afraid to say anything that will incite further anger, although that is precisely the emotion that’s justified.

In a video on Instagram, Beyonce said: ““We need justice for George Floyd. We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight. We’re broken and we’re disgusted. We cannot normalise this pain.

“George is all of our family in humanity. He’s our family because he’s a fellow American.”

Billie Eilish slammed “All Lives Matter” supporters following Mr Floyd’s death.

Spanish PM Request Final Extention to Lockdown

May 31, 2020

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said he will ask parliament for a final two-week extension of the nation’s state of emergency that has allowed the government to impose lockdown measures.

The current state of emergency is set to expire on June 7, and Mr Sanchez said the request will be “the last, definitive extension of 15 days”.

The lockdown has succeeded in tackling an outbreak that has claimed at least 27,000 lives.

Mr Sanchez said the final stretch of the lockdown will include the handing back of control over health care to the regions that have shown the most progress in containing the virus.

The central government is rolling back confinement measures depending on which areas have fewer infections and are better prepared for a possible second outbreak.

Villa’s Ming Says Football Restart Fueled by Money

May 31, 2020

Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings believes the Premier League’s return is driven by money.

The England defender also said players were the last to be consulted about the top flight’s comeback plans.

The Premier League is due to restart on June 17 after being halted in March by the coronavirus pandemic.

There were no positive results in the most recent round of tests at Premier League clubs and the UK government says elite sport can return behind closed doors from Monday.

Mings told the Daily Mail: “Project Restart is financially driven. I think everybody accepts that.

The top-flight has conducted 3,882 tests for the virus over four rounds of testing on players and staff at clubs.

There were 12 positive results from the first three rounds but there was an all-clear from the fourth screening session which featured tests of 1,130 players and club personnel.

Villa are due to resume on June 17 against Sheffield United, their game in hand, and Mings is eager to get going with Dean Smith’s side second bottom.

Paris St Germain have triggered the option to sign Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi.

The Argentina international was on loan at the Ligue 1 club during the 2019-20 campaign before the French season was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in PSG claiming their ninth league title.

Icardi has now signed a four-year contract to remain in the French capital on a permanent basis after scoring 20 goals and registering four assists in 31 appearances for the club.

Both teams confirmed the transfer, with Inter saying in a statement: “The club thanks the player for the six seasons he spent with us and wishes him the best for his future professional career.”

Pope Francis Calls for Unity

Pope Francis Calls for Unity

May 31, 2020

Pope Francis has advised against pessimism as many people emerge from coronavirus lockdowns to a new way of living.

During Mass in St Peter’s Basilica to mark Pentecost Sunday, Francis noted a tendency to say “nothing will return as before”. That kind of thinking, he said, guarantees “the one thing that certainly does not return is hope”.

He took to task his own church for its fragmentation, saying it must pull together.

“The world sees conservatives and progressives,” he said, but instead all are “children of God”.

Telling the faithful to focus on what unites them, he added: “In this pandemic, how wrong narcissism is. The tendency to think only of our needs, to be indifferent to those of others, and to not admit our own frailties and mistakes.

UK FM Promises to Stand By Former Colony

The UK will not turn a blind eye and look away from its responsibilities to the people of Hong Kong, Dominic Raab has promised.

The Foreign Secretary confirmed that the UK will allow those who hold BNO passports to come to the UK and apply to study and work for an extendable 12-month period which in turn will “provide a path to citizenship”.

China’s ceremonial legislature, the National People’s Congress, endorsed a security law for Hong Kong earlier this week that has strained relations with the UK and the US.

The law will alter the territory’s mini-constitution, or Basic Law, to require its government to enforce measures to be decided later by Chinese leaders.

It comes as Mr Raab said up to three million people registered as a British national (overseas) in Hong Kong could be eligible for UK citizenship if China presses ahead with its proposals to gain more control over the former colony.

Mahrez, 29, was said to not have been at home when the offenders used a key fob to access his apartment and three others in the Manchester city centre block on the afternoon of April 24.

The Sun quoted a letter sent to residents which read: “Four apartments were accessed without authority using a fob which had general access throughout the building.

“The fob in question is now in our possession, has been fully deactivated and cannot be used again.”

Police are investigating.
